NaNoWriMo 2007

November is National Novel Writing Month. 50,000 words in 31 days. Starting tomorrow, I need to average around 1,600 words a day.

I was planning on blogging the novel, but logistically, its going to be kinda of a pain, so I'll just post excerpts and word count updates. My plan is to get up early and write in the morning. Haha. Yeah, I know - we'll see how it goes.

French Quarter was closed, so we went to En, a Japanese place.

Halloween and Cajun Food

Megen made me a birthday cake last night but I'm not allowed to have any until tonight. We're going to the French Quarter Cafe in Germantown for dinner to celebrate, then come home and eat cake while we give out candy.

Saturday morning

I usually sleep in on weekends. But Megen has a wedding and some other event at work today so I got up early with her so we could have coffee together before she left. Besides, Saturday morning is a nice chance to catch up on any shows on the TIVO or any movies I've had sitting around.

Finally got around to watching Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It was entertaining, doesn't try to be anything more than mindless popcorn fun. All about expectations, I suppose. I don't expect the FF movies to be awesome so when they aren't, I still enjoy them.

As opposed to Batman or Spiderman -- where when they are awesome, they blow me away, and when they are just average or really suck, I want to poke my eyes out I get so mad.

Warming up some leftover spaghetti and I'm about to watch The Host in HD-DVD. Been wanting to see this one for a while.

Its in the game

Heroes: Veronica Mars.

Heroes is driving me nuts this year. The pacing has always been hideously slow on the show but this year, the quality is just all over the place. Anywho, last night's episode had one bright spot I enjoyed - it's Veronica Mars! (Kristen Bell). Enjoy the pics I stole from Greg Beeman's blog.

Mid Term

Working on my mid term exam this weekend. 4 open book essay questions. Not particularly challenging. However, writing essays takes a bit of practice as it is not the kind of writing I do every day. In college, I could crank out a good B- essay if I had a good 3-4 undisturbed hours. If I put in another pass or two, I could get it to an A.

Motivation is an issue for me since this is a intro IT graduate class and its all very basic stuff that I already know. However, working with computers every day does give me lots of grist for the mill -- I have no problems coming up with topics and issues to write about.

Anyhoo, enough procrastinating. Back to writing.

PS Whoever invented the APA style guide needs to die. (Actually, they probably are dead.) God, I hate APA.

Wedding photos

So Megen and I are planning on getting our wedding party photos taken before the ceremony. That way, we can take as much time as we want on the photos and still enjoy our reception. The question is: Where do we go to get pictures taken? Waterfront? DC monuments? Streets of Old Town Alexandria? We need something interesting, visually distinctive.

As I pondered, I came across this piece of sublime wedding photography:

Well played, Mr. and Mrs. Berry. Well played.

Portal = awesomeness

10,000 gamerscore

Woot.

I want this.

Family meeting, wedding update

This past weekend, Megen's parents came to visit. We had a bbq at our house with Ken, Judy, Archie, Annette and Nate so they could meet Meg's mom and dad and sister, Ellen. We BBQ'd burgers and salmon teriyaki (well, uncle Ken cooked the salmon), and Megen made potato salad and parfait for dessert. I liked having my uncle poke the meat while it grilled to tell me if it was rare, medium rare or well done.

Meg also went dress shopping on Friday with her mom and sister. She said she found some that she liked and she's checking Little Coral to see if we can get some chinese boys to make the final dress on the cheap!

After dinner

I often feel this way after I eat too.

Like Heroes? I do.

If you like Heroes as much as I do, Greg Beeman's weblog is a must read blog. He is an executive producer and director for the show. He fills his blog with lots of behind the scenes details and pictures.

Check out this pic from his blog (from last week's episode).

Fighter's Stronghold=Free

Well, sometime tonight or tomorrow morning, Oblivion's latest downloadable content - Fighter's Stronghold - will be free on Xbox Live or for PC, you can get it here. I think you should download it. Even if you aren't playing Oblivion right now. You never know, since its only free for a week. Download it while you can and save it. Perhaps you'll get Oblivion or Oblivion Game of the Year as a present for the holidays. Maybe you'll get an RPG craving and hit up on Oblivion again.

You never know. And I love free. FREE is awesome.

Wish you were here

What I'm Playing: October

The Orange Box: I never finished Half Life 2 for PC, looking forward to playing it on my large plasma with surround sound. Portal is fascinating. But the biggest thing is Team Fortress 2, my favorite multiplayer shooter - I LOVE Team Fortress and I had a blast playing TF2 last night. I'm particularly impressed with how Valve created their own custom achievement interface so you can track them easier. Lots of fun playing TF2. I will be busy with this for a long time; I may never go back and finish Halo 3 now.

NCAA Football: Still playing Campus Legend. My QB is a senior now, and I'm shooting to win the national title.

Carcassone: This is a great way to unwind when I only have a short amount of time.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass: If you love Zelda, you will love this game. I'm shocked how good it looks on a DS. My only complaint is that my arm gets tired holding the stylus for so long, since the entire game is played with the stylus. (Yes, I am a big lazy wimp).

Phoenix Wright Justice for All: Good fun. I like playing in short snippets before bed.

Yaris: Hey it was free! And its Nate's car in it. And it was a big stinking pile of poo.

Next month is just pure slaughter. Mass Effect, Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4, and Assassin's Creed. Gamefly is about to pay for itself big time in November.

MTV Moon Man

That's right - we won an MTV music award for Oblivion.

Bring on the discounts! Megen started her new job yesterday. She has like 2 weeks of orientation and training stuff, though she is going to the hotel on Sunday to observe an event going on.

Fallout contest, woot

We're having a contest to celebrate Fallout's 10th anniversary. Damn. 10 years in the gaming world (or the tech world for that matter) is like centuries old.

Here are a sampling of the perks (special powers/skills you can get in the game) I've pitched through development that are presently on the cutting room floor.

Token Asian: If there aren't any Asian people living there, I'm not living there either! With Token Asian, you can detect any near by Asians and be comforted by their presence. If your perception is high enough, you'll see the nearest Pho, too!

The iPip
: This perk enhances your pip boy, allowing you to turn it sideways and flip through your inventory with the touch of your finger - complete with original album covers. Google maps optional (but highly recommended).

The (After) Life of the Party: Unlocks a new signal in your Pip Boy that plays Fall Out Boy's The (After) Life of the Party over and over again - as if you had set it on repeat one afternoon when you needed to concentrate on putting some layouts and builds together so you shut the door to your office and this song came on and you became obsessed with it for some reason so you set it to play the rest of the day.

Hair Magnet: You are now specially tuned to the Earth's electromagnetic field and are able to lift cat hairs off furniture, rugs and carpets without the use of the vacuum.
