I noticed next update includes ability to pinpoint location using cell tower triangulation - nice GPS-like hack.

New Toys, Lazy Friday
Using Best Buy gift card from the future in laws, I picked up a wireless print server. Works great with our laser printer. Our HP All In One scanner/photo/printer/fax/espresso maker isn't on the list of supported printers, but I might try seeing if it will work. The print server supports scanning, though scanning from the laptop is not a big deal.
Megen is working today, I'm just hanging. Watching a Frontline special about Asian kids going to Poland to learn how to play Chopin. Chopin's music is so gorgeous, I just want to listen to them play.
Call of Duty 4
Just finished it. Awesome ending. Me want more awesomeness.

Stardust
We watched Stardust last night. Fantastic movie. I'm a Gaiman fan and liked the book, too. You had me at flying pirate ships!

Games for 2007
I played lots of great games this year. So here is my list of favorites (keep in mind, there are lots of games I'd like to play that would probably be on this list if I had played them, but I didn't, so they aren't on this list - looking at you Mario Galaxy).
Portal: This was one of the best games I've ever played. So good I wish I had made it.
Carcasonne on Xbox Live: No better way to kill 20 minutes. A great board game translated pretty well to console. Catan is actually a better game but takes too long to play.
Bioshock!: I wish they had kept the exclamation. I'm a fan of the System Shock games. Bioshock really hit the mark. Art style was fantastic, and I saved all the little sisters so got the ending that, yes, did make me tear up.
Call of Duty 4: Playing this now and its fantastic. Another game so good I wish I had made it. Also has a terrific multiplayer implementation with a leveling up system.
Mass Effect: I enjoyed Mass Effect, and plan on replaying it again. Can't help wishing it were Star Wars (I just want a light saber), though the new universe (reminds me a lot of David Brin's Uplift series minus the talking animals) was interesting.
Puzzle Quest: I'm an RPG fan, so you can pretty take any game, add leveling and XP to it, and I'll play it to death. Puzzle Quest is bejeweled with RPG muckety muck added to it. I still play this since its on my DS so portable.
The Witcher: I'm currently playing this, as well. I'm a bit surprised how much I'm enjoying it. I probably won't finish it as it only runs on my computer at work.
Rock Band: This is pretty awesome, especially for parties or family get-togethers.
I just started playing Assassin's Creed and am enjoying it so far. I played lots of other good stuff this year, too. Halo 3, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Crackdown, NCAA Football, Wii Sports. And I have a backlog of stuff I played a little bit and hope to get back to (though probably never will) including Eternal Sonata.

Slow Saturday
Megen is working today so I'm off on my own. I returned some books to the library, had a bite to eat at Chick Fil A, did some holiday shopping at Target and Starbucks, picked up Crysis for our game library at work (EB at Lakeforest Mall was INSANELY packed -- though I saw the Art of Mass Effect artbook and almost picked it up - soo pretty), and stopped by the office (aka, my 2nd home) to write some stuff for the bethblog and othet stuff, but I'll probably just end up playing more Witcher since my PC rig at work beefier than what I've got at home. I have a few hours to kill before heading into the city for Nathan's B-day Drunkathon*.

4 weeks to repair??!! D'oh!
So I called Microsoft and they said they would fix my Xbox. Awesome. But its going to take 4 weeks. What? Ouch. I picked up a newer Xbox -- its manufacture date is from October '07 so hopefully it won't give me the red rings.

Windows NT, Klingon edition
I'm reading a book called The Build Master by Vincent Maraia, the book is about Microsoft's configuration management processes and best practices. Its fairly basic and I'm not finding it that insightful or interesting, though if you are someone who needs an introduction to software build processes, this book does a good job of that.
Anywho, the chapter on International Builds has a sidebar about Microsoft localizers who actually created a localized build of Windows NT entirely in Klingon. How funny is that?
Meg and I were just watching Chuck and they started speaking Klingon in the show. Or, rather, I recognized they were speaking Klingon and turned to Meg and said, those guys just spoke in Klingon, and she just nodded - as Meg is not surprised that I recognize what Klingon sounds like. She, on the other hand, mixes up Star Trek and Star Wars on a regular basis.

Nooooooo!!!!!
I went online to register it and see if I can get it fixed via Microsoft. I don't have an service warranty on this 360 because this is the replacement for my first 360 - which I did have a service repair warranty on. Turns out the service warranties from Best Buy are per product. Get another Xbox? Gotta buy the service warranty again. I just never got around to buying one since my replacement got shipped to me.
Well, its out of warranty now. I'm screwed and have to buy another 360. I'll probably try and get it from Costco which has a lifetime warranty of products. Not cool, Microsoft. Maybe I'll just get a Playstation 3 instead.
UPDATE: Turns out the red ring issue has an extended 3 year warranty so Microsoft is going to fix it. Woot.
